    Naagara Panchami: A Revered Celebration in the Hindu Calendar

    Naagara Panchami, also known as Naaga Panchami, is a significant festival in the Hindu calendar, celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists in India and Nepal.     It is a practice in Karnataka to worship Gouri as Divashi Gouri on Ashada amaavasya. This vruta is mentioned in Skanda Purana dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Married women do it for the long life of their spouse. Unmarried women observe the same for the well being of their brothers, father & to get a good Groom for them.
    The same day is called by different names w.r.t. different states. It bbis also called as Bheemana Amavasya in Karnataka.
    Brothers have to take out coin from the small dough balls kept on the Hostilu/Hocchala(a small wooden/Stone part used to make a marking  between two rooms. This practice is calledas Bhandaar Vodeyuvadu.

    It is practice in North Karnataka and its adjacent parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra to worship Goddess Gouri on the full moon days of Autumn season (Sharath Purnima). On the full moon day of Ashwija month of Hindu calender Gouri will be worshipped as “Sheegi Gouri”, “Sheegavva”, “Sanna Gouri” etc. There are no specific procedures and mantras for this ritual. Some wild flowers will be offered and a garland prepared from cotton with vermilion locally known as “Gejje vasthra” will be offered to the deity. Folk songs in vernacular will be sung by the womenfolk in praise of the Goddess during puja. An aarathi will be performed in the evening by placing fruits, sweets, colourful confectioneries prepared from crystalized sugar syrup in the Aarathi plate. Goddess Gouri will be treated as their daughter who has visited her maternal home. Rice,turmeric , vermilion, bangles, coconut and other auspicious items will be offered to the Goddess before immersion of the idol prepared from potter’s clay into the water.

    Chaitra is a first month of the Hindu calendar. The first day of Chaitra month is UGADI/ Gudhi Padwa.  From the third day, Chaitra Gauri goddess (wife of Lord Shiva) is worshipped for one month. It is believed that Goddess Parvati visits her maternal home and stays there for a month. Chaitra Gouri is installed or Invited(Aahwaan) on the third day (Tritiya) till Akshaya Tritiya and Visarjana is done.

    Chaitra Gouri is also known as Tadige Gouri and Soubhagya Gouri. This Gouri is usually on a Swing. The Murti also comes in the same fashion.

    The Pooja is done and any one day before Visarjan, many Muttaide/Suhagan(Married Women) are invited for Haldi-Kumkum. Newly married ladies-Daughter in law are made to perform this Pooja and they are made to wash the feet of invited ladies, apply Haldi-Kumkum, give them Tamboola-Udi/Oti with soaked Red Channa and take their blessings. As it is the season of Mango, Raw Mango-Cucumber Koshambir and Mango/Aam Panha is given to all. This is practiced usually by them for the first five years of Marriage.
